Anger is "an
emotional state that varies in intensity from mild irritation to intense fury
and rage," The instinctive, natural way to express anger is to respond
aggressively. The three main approaches are expressing, suppressing, and
calming. Expressing your angry feelings in an assertive—not aggressive—manner
is the healthiest way to express anger. It means being respectful of yourself
and others. The goal of anger management is to reduce both your emotional
feelings and the physiological arousal that anger causes.
Simple relaxation tools,
such as deep breathing and relaxing imagery, can help calm down angry feelings.
Physical activity can provide an outlet for your emotions, especially if you're
about to erupt. If you feel your anger escalating, go for a brisk walk or run,
or spend some time doing other favorite physical activities. Physical activity
stimulates various brain chemicals that can leave you feeling happier and more
relaxed than you were before you worked out.
